WHY DAN IS DOING THISI have several motivations for trying to organize a program such as this. The obvious motivation is that I love to hike. I've been hiking the Southern California mountains for a lot of years, and while I'm not a fanatic and don't hike 30 times a year, I like to get in shape and make it to one of the summits at least once a year. A second motivation is the combination of challenges. I have the challenge of getting myself ready to do these peaks, and the tougher challenge of getting other people to do them as well. My third motivation you can read about on the Bonus Insanity Hikes link on the main page. I've prepared myself for getting to the top of some mountains, and got only part way and had to stop and turn around. It was disappointing yes, I didn't reach my goal. But there was fun in the attempt. I got in better shape mentally and physically just trying. Not reaching the summit didn't keep me from taking in the mountain views and fresh air. And I learned what it would take the next time I wanted to attempt to get to the top again. I have a goal to get 6 people to participate in this program who are not hikers. There will be people who come out who have already climbed all 3 peaks multiple times. But I also want to get some people out who have never really taken a hike up a mountain trail before. I want to get someone even half way up a mountain who never thought they could get that far. |
