Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why are there ads on all these website's pages, and why do I keep getting these stupid pop ups?
A: Well, Angelfire offers free websites, but you have to put up with their advertising. If I get a huge turnout this year, next year I'll buy the domain name! So.....Come hike with us!
Q: What are the best hiking boots or shoes, and where should I get them?

A: The best thing for your feet are hiking boots, the 3/4 or high-top type. These are rugged, offer traction, and offer ankle support. Legs will get tired and ankles could roll a bit on rocky or sandy spots on the trail. That said, walking/running/tennis shoes are usually lighter, cheaper, and more comfortable since that's what people are used to. The one thing you don't want to do is to get a new pair of something a week before a long hike, or even a short one. If you do buy new, wear them around, and go for some short walks to break them in.

As for where to buy? I'm not the one to ask about shopping, as I usually just go to the first place I see that I think would have what I want to buy. Big 5 usually has ok quality, with decent price, but not always a great selection.
Q: What if I'm not in shape and can't get to the tops of the mountains?
A: It doesn't matter. You will enjoy the time on the trails no matter how far you go on any of the hikes. Even the first training hike, if you only make it 1 mile, and want to turn around and go back, then you'll be hiking 2 miles. And that's fine. Come to the second training hike and try to go 2 miles out, then you'll be hiking 4 miles. The more you do, the more you'll be able to do next time. After 3 or 4 training hikes (plus a few walks during the week on your own), you will notice something.....you'll be getting 'in shape'.

NOTE: Even if you don't think you can make it to the top of a mountain, come and try, and go as far as you can.

Q: I can't come to all the hikes so should I not bother with any of them?
A: Come to every hike you can. We won't be taking roll, and you'll be glad you did.
Q: Are kids welcome on the hikes?
A: Yes! Just make sure they know you won't be giving them a piggy back ride up and/or down! Otherwise you'll be too tired to make it yourself.
Q: Are dogs welcome on the hikes?
A: Yes! But there is a leash rule. I checked with the Forest Service, and there is a fine if a ranger catches one not on a leash.
