TIME |
Yes, this program will take up some of your time. The mountains will pay you back though. |
GAS |
You will have to drive to the hike locations. Carpool if you have to drive far, and share the gas $$. |
PACK |
If you don't have a small backpack, borrow one, pick one up at a yardsale, or at the Salvation Army. If you must have new, they are probably $25-$40 at a sporting goods store. |
SHOES |
The hikes are on rocky, sandy, dirt trails, so hiking boots are preferred because they are rugged and offer support and traction. I have gone on many many hikes in running/walking shoes. I'm sure no one will have any problems wearing running/walking shoes, just expect them to get worn out faster. |
FOOD |
It's good to get used to the kinds of foods you will want to eat on the longer hikes, so I suggest that you pack food and snacks even for the training hikes. |
FOREST SERVICE ADVENTURE PASS (PARKING) |
You will need an Adventure Pass for parking at some of the hikes. These can be purchased all over like Big 5, Sport Mart, Sport Chalet, any Forest Service station etc. They are $5 for a day, or $35 for a year. For the hikes that require a pass, I will list a meet location/time, and we can carpool up. People who already have a pass can give rides to the ones who don't. |
SKI LIFT FARE |
For the Mt. Baldy summit hike, there is a ski lift that can cut 1.5-2 hours off the hike. It's fun to take, and it makes the hike easier and the day shorter. That will be an option if people choose to take it. I think it is $18 up and down, or $10 one way. |
TRAM RIDE |
This is the biggest expense of the program, but it is the most fun. For the San Jacinto summit hike, we will take the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway up to the trailhead. It is an awesome ride! It costs $22 round trip. |
